The Valley Comes Alive for a Historical and Truly Wonderful Celebration

The 5th of May is upon us once again! Cinco de Mayo is a much anticipated celebration here in the Valley of the Sun. It’s a truly festive day filled with food, music, dancing and plenty of unique fun. Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday in Mexico commemorating the Battle of Puebla. On May 5, 1862 a small group of Mexican soldiers defeated a formidable French army that was twice its size. Mexico had long before (September 16, 1810) declared its independence, but there were constant struggles to maintain Mexico’s freedom for a long time after the country became independent from Spanish rule. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the fortitude of the Mexican people.

A WORLD-CLASS APPROACH TO CELEBRATING BEER

The 10th Annual Strong Beer Festival / Saturday February 13th, 2010

The Strong Beer Festival continues to impress here in the Valley, bringing Arizonans a truly enjoyable afternoon of unique beer and fun. Now celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the Strong Beer Festival was first organized in 2001 as a way to allow individual brewers to showcase specialty beers in one convenient location. This allowed the public to sample small “tastes” of these beers without having to travel all over the state. It also gave the beer drinking populace an opportunity to speak directly with many of the brewmasters who actually create these beers.

Over the years, the Strong Beer Festival has grown to feature “strong beers” while also offering many other different types and styles of beer for tasting. The festival has been moved this year to Margaret T. Hance Park in downtown Phoenix. This move makes the event more centrally located in the metropolitan area. It’s now only a four block walk from the Roosevelt/Central light rail station to provide a transportation alternative. The festival provides musical entertainment as well including the 2 Tone Lizard Kings who will entertain visitors with their fun and upbeat music. A good selection of food items will be available for purchase as well. The Arizona Craft Brewers Guild was established in 1999. This non-profit organization has been dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of the craft brewing industry in Arizona.

The guild is dedicated to maintaining the quality and image of Arizona-produced beers through the education of consumers, retailers, distributors and brewers. The guild strives to protect the interests of Arizona brewers and consumers through networking and communication between members and other industry related entities and legislative and governing bodies. The brewer’s guild also encourages responsible consumption of brewery products. Modern craft brewing began in Arizona after the state legislature passed laws in 1987. Two laws were passed, both providing relief from the traditional three-tier distribution system.

One allowed a restaurant to both produce and sell beer, making brew pubs legal. The other allowed a brewery to also distribute its products directly to bars, restaurants and the public, which made microbreweries legal. Over the years, these laws have been changed and revised to accommodate the growing craft beer industry. In many cases the distinction between brew pubs and microbreweries has become somewhat blurred to the casual observer.

VIP tickets are only available online during advance ticket sales. Online advance ticket sales end 2/7/10. Remaining General admission tickets will be available at the gate. Saturday February 13th, 2010 Noon to 5pm Margaret T. Hance Park, Downtown Phoenix (above I-10 tunnel) Festival Entrance at Moreland St. and 2nd St. Admission: VIP Noon to 5pm $50.00 General $35. Presale or $45 at the door Visit www.azbrewguild.com for more information.
