| Billy ‘Get in my Belly’ Nelly’s Review of the Week |
Like an old boss I once had who came from Louisiana and pronounced ‘house’ as ‘hahs’ and ‘drink’ as ‘drank’, I like to say ‘HAY-zul Hwooooods when I visit Hazelwood’s First Place Sports Grill on Indian School and 36th Street to take in a Michigan State basketball or football game (sorry, ASU Sun Devils; you’re going to have to cope with the #2 ranking in m’noggin, but in all other contests, you are a big fat foam finger). The southern thing is about ‘good ‘ol’ and ‘down-home’ and ‘Yee-Hawww!’, and Hazelwood’s offers all of these concepts by way of a local demographic, comfort food, and sports viewing. Popular arcade games and table ball games line the interior, which opens into a spacious smoking patio full of TVs and tables for outdoor fanatics. The best thing about the Hazelwood’s experience is its price tag. For no earthly reason should a guy be able to have three beers and an order of wings for $10.37, but at happy hour made happier by a Spartan victory and the cool sensation of a Bud heavy in the back of my throat provided it regardless. Drop in during certain day time hours for live sessions with Krimson Chord, whose motto is ‘Have Music, Will Rock’. Carrying all the packages, Hazelwood’s also features a private flatscreen at each booth, with volume and channel control. Some people’s idea of heaven is white clouds and harps; some like 17 virgins and a couple couches; I like Hazelwood’s. For your next sports must-see or night out, stop on by and see if you’d like to share my slice of paradise. Hazelwood’s First Place Sports Grill 3626 E. Indian School Rd.
