| Corner Bakery and Café: Tempting Your Mouth without Testing Your Wallet |

With the economy crumbling, it’s unusual to find a business that is just getting under way in the Valley. The only crumbling you will find at the newly opened Corner Bakery and Café in Peoria, however, are the crumbs coming off your sandwich’s fresh baked bread. The café, which had its official ribbon-cutting debut on March 2nd, marks the first of 15 franchise locations set to open in coming years throughout the Valley. The eatery provides guests with delicious sandwiches, soups, salads, pasta and baked goods at a price that is economically friendly, with most entrées running under $8. The Chicken Pomodori Panini on sourdough bread with sliced chicken breast, basil, spinach, oven-roasted tomatoes, provolone cheese, and pesto mayo is not overly greasy, which Panini’s tend to be. The crunch of the bread is perfect and the sourdough flavor not overly-tart, and the sandwiches are accompanied by a slightly droopy pickle and flavorfulbut not too salty- “bakery chips”. You get a lot of food for a low price here. The delectable salads come in their usual green form, but also take the shape of such tempting options as ginger asparagus couscous, Caprese salad (with fresh mozzarella, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, basil, and parsley), and Asian Edamame salad (with cilantro in a ginger citrus dressing), among others. The croutons are homemade and slightly spicy; put some on a bowl of homemade chili and you will barely budge your budget. Save room for desert, or perhaps just go there for the desert because they are all impressive. They have an extensive variety of cookies and cakes that are easily sharable with a friend or easily saved for later. The rugelach displayed slight sweetness of the tartlet-like pastry that wasn’t too overwhelming, yet still clearly qualified as a desert. If you’re a coffee drinker, they also serve good ‘Joe’ to supplement your desert or meal. Flavor, freshness, and affordability; for Central Phoenix and East Valley residents, the Corner Bakery and Café is definitely worth a trip to Peoria before the next locations settle in.
