| For the Love of Wine: The Best of New Zealand |

As the weather heats up and the white wines begin to flow in the Arizona desert, I begin to think “I need a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc”. Their wines are absolutely refreshing and perfect for life here in the valley, but I can’t help wondering: What about the rest of the wines from New Zealand? It seems as if everyone enjoys at least a little Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc, and a few of us more adventurous types may even savor a little Pinot Noir from Central Otago -- but anything else . . . Why not have a dry, crisp glass of Marlborough Riesling? Or a bold Cabernet or Syrah from Hawkes Bay? I often think of drinking imported wines as a small window into the culture and people of that country; a vacation in a glass you might say. So I ask myself: Is New Zealand a one or two wine adventure? Let’s find out together. Grab a few of your wine-drinking friends, and let’s take a trip to New Zealand without the 18-hour flight. I’ll do the same, we’ll all have a good time, and maybe even learn a little in the process. I have recommended an ‘itinerary’; it includes both islands, six regions, and suggested varietals. If you have any questions about producers, where to find the wines, or if you’d like to tell me about your vacation ‘in a glass’, please e-mail me at nate@ sportsmans4wine.com. This adventure will be the ‘homework’ we all wished for in school. Once we’ve all had our little whakangahau (that’s Māori for party, but I can’t pronounce it,) I’ll revisit the wines of New Zealand during the first week of June, and hopefully, I’ll have some of your comments to add. North Island: Auckland, Pinot Gris or Chardonnay (Kumeu is one of the best know areas from this region) Gisborne, Chardonnay Hawkes Bay, Bordeaux style Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot based blends or Syrah South Island: Marlborough, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir Cantenbury/Waipara, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir (Martinborough is the best know area from this region) Central Otago, Pinot Noir, Riesling or Chardonnay (Pinots from this region can be expensive) Mears is the Director of Operations at Sportman’s Fine Wine & Spirits, with multiple Valley Locations (www. sportsmans4wine.com).
