The 5th of May is upon us once again! Cinco de Mayo is a much anticipated celebration here in the Valley of the Sun. It’s a truly festive day filled with food, music, dancing and plenty of unique fun. Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday in Mexico commemorating the Battle of Puebla. On May 5, 1862 a small group of Mexican soldiers defeated a formidable French army that was twice its size. Mexico had long before (September 16, 1810) declared its independence, but there were constant struggles to maintain Mexico’s freedom for a long time after the country became independent from Spanish rule. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the fortitude of the Mexican people. Cinco de Mayo Celebrations On Cinco de Mayo there are many restaurants, bars and night clubs that will be offering happy hours, margarita and tequila discounts, mariachis, and other Arizona Cinco de Mayo celebratory specials. Following are a few top-notch restaurants and clubs in Greater Phoenix that are known to offer live music for their Cinco de Mayo gatherings. Saturday, May 1st Cinco de Mayo Fourth Annual Salsa Challenge 12pm – 3pm El Pedegral El Pedregal hosts its fourth annual outdoor Salsa Challenge on Saturday, May 1, showcasing more than a dozen Arizona Chefs and Restaurants including The Spotted Donkey, El Encanto, Harold’s Cave Creek Corral, Dos Diablos, Tonto Bar & Grill, Scottsdale Pantry, 3 Margaritas and Rubios! Guests are invited to sample salsas from around the valley and listen to festive music by the female mariachi group, Mariachi Pasion, and watch salsa dance performances by Tropical Vibes Dance Company at 1p.m. and 2p.m. In addition, the festival will offer a variety of tastings by Semental Tequila and local chefs will compete for the title of “Best Salsa” in the Valley. The Bakery Café will feature Mexican wedding cookies and churros while the Boulders outdoor grill will feature hot items including tacos al carbon, and tostada de carnitas, among others. Admission is Free. Saturday, May 1st Cinco de Mayo Celebration and Chihuahua Races 10am – 11am Chandler Downtown Library Chihuahua races and the crowning of King and Queen Chihuahua will be underway. This two-day family festival features musical performances by local bands, ballet folklorico, product samplings, Mexican food and other family activities. Cinco de Sandbar Scottsdale Saturday May 1st – 5th 11am – 2am Sandbar is hosting a 3 day Cinco de Mayo fiesta! Cinco de Sandbar kicks off on May 1st with an all day Strongman Competition and fortunately, you don’t need tickets to this ‘gun show’. Guests attending can put their strength to the test throughout the day and later watch the much anticipated duke out between Mayweather and Mosley. To participate contact Sandbar at 480.998.8845. Local artists Adam Shero and Another Day will provide the soundtrack for the festivities. Sandbar in Chandler is hosting a 3 day Cinco de Mayo fiesta! Cinco de Sandbar kicks off on May 1st with a competition of the canines, Chihuahua Races! As the little guys tread down the tracks, guests are encouraged to celebrate the Kentucky Derby in a Derby Hat Contest with $300 in cash and prizes.
