Most expected, as this reviewer, a lot of commentary, musical clips, and the glitz & glamour that normally surrounds the ”King of Pop”. What we get is the creative process along with the hard work, long hours, and tenacity of the persons involved, in preparation for the most ambitious tour of each of their lives. We get a rare, behind-the-scenes look at Michael Jackson as he developed, created and rehearsed for his sold-out concerts that would have taken place beginning this summer in London. The months from April through June 2009 are highlighted from more than one hundred hours of behind-thescenes footage, as it captures Michael Jackson the singer, dancer, filmmaker, architect, and creative genius as he prepares for what was to be his final concert tour. Aspects of the creative relationship between Kenny Ortega, Michael Jackson’s creative partner and the director of the stage show, the audition process of the dancers chosen for the tour, and the shooting of the audio/visual segments to be used for the show, are among the many insights shared in “This Is It”. One aspect for me, it was amazing how Michael Jackson at 50 years old, kept pace with dancers half his age during rehearsals. At 112 minutes, “This Is It” seems to go by in an instant, and when it finally comes to DVD after its limited engagement run, it will be that collector’s item that is sure to get multiple viewings! Directed by Kenny Ortega. Rated PG for some suggestive choreography and scary images. Sony Pictures Releasing release. Runtime: 112 minutes.
