THE SECOND CITY DOES ARIZONA at Arizona Theatre Company, Phoenix There were no sacred cows left after the hilarious and comedic production of SECOND CITY DOES ARIZONA from the Arizona Theatre company at the Herberger Center in Phoenix this past weekend. This was a calculated risk given the history of Arizona politics and personalities, but the payoff was a non stop marathon of jokes and laughs worth every penny! This show was “perfect” from the start taking us where no news or print medium had gone before-or will since Tina Fey became Sarah Palin. There was the usual praise of Sherriff Joe and aliens, Senator John and the politicians, our beloved photo radar revealed, tourists and more tourists, Mexicans, Indians, Jews, Canadians, Gays, Javalina’s, Ostrich farms, government consultants , border patrols, spelling bees and even” rain from Spain”. Suffice to say, you will love this grilling of Arizona! It’s worth seeing again just for the improve portion of the show. Kudos to Director Matt Hovde and his brilliant cast from second city including Ryan Archibald, Amanda Blake Davis, Cody Dove, Lauren Dowden, Martin Garcia and Andel Sudik. And thanks for letting our friends over at Cox cable know how we really feel. Through May 16th for Tickets call 602-256-6899 or online at ArizonaTheatre.org. NO CHILD at Actors Theater in Phoenix There is a teaching artist in town presenting her one-woman show titled
NO CHILD at the Herberger Center in Phoenix. Nilaja Sun, who has written and performed this award winning play for over five years, is stunning in her portrayal of the life and times of a teaching artist at the Malcolm X High School in the Bronx, New York. We get the sense that Nilaja has an incredible memory of the characters, teachers and students who framed her experience at this inner city high school while she taught drama. As revealed, we get to experience them up close and personal. From the school janitor, to Ms.Tam’s class of clowns, Nilaja has hit gold with the grit and personality these fragile souls carry. There’s so much levity from character to character, and scene to scene that this is a very special performance indeed. The fact that Nilaja was able to reach 27 kids and help them “shine” is testament to the beauty and brilliance of this great show! See it until May 9th. Tickets at 602-253-6701 or online at ActorsTheatrePhx.org.
CATWALK at Scorpius Dance Theatre in Phoenix Lisa Starry has been a bright influence in the dance scene in Phoenix for a long time. Her vision and creativity express what few can see or feel in the culture today. Her new production CATWALK is no different. Combining a multimedia approach to staging, incorporating clothing designers into the look and feel of her dance pieces, while using original music transitions and interludes for dance movements- Lisa has hit the mark again! The Runway Interlude series capturing the egos, vanity and beauty of the runway fashion industry were revealing and picturesque. But the shows highlights were in the dancer’s movements and emotions in A Better Tomorrow, Electric Barbarella, Hearing Damage, The Chauffeur, Beautiful People and Bolero. Catwalk is a dance presentation full of talent and color in every aspect of production. Catch this Scorpius Production through May 9th at the Phoenix Little Theatre. Tickets 602-254-2151.
