Live at Celebrity Theatre / Tuesday, February 14th at 8pm
Over the past two decades Kenny G has established himself as the biggest-selling instrumental musician of the modern era, with global sales totaling more than 75 million albums (45 million in the U.S. alone). His grafted elements of R&B, pop and Latin to a jazz foundation have earned him GRAMMY®, American Music, Soul Train, World Music and NAACP Image awards as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “Songbird,” “Forever In Love,” “Silhouette,” “The Moment,” “Fall Again” and “Heart and Soul” are among the hit-makers best known successes. He has collaborated with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole and Frank Sinatra just to name a few.
Kenny G’s most recent project is an album with Rahul Sharmaof titled Namaste India. Light Indian melodies constructed around the santoor exchange the musical baton has with Kenny G’s easy saxophone entries and exits.
A young Kenny Gorelick of Seattle, Washington discovered the saxophone one evening while watching the Ed Sullivan show. He took up the saxophone when he was a teenager. He plays the alto and tenor saxophone as well as the flute, but his main instrument of choice is the soprano saxophone. His first solo was played in Grammy-Award winning Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra. White was impressed by Kenny G’s mastery of the blues scale, and that was the start of his journey in jazz.
Kenny G possesses exceptional control over his breathing. He uses a technique referred to as circular breathing. Due to the fact that he is extremely proficient at this method, he is able to hold a note longer than many other saxophone players. This takes skill and discipline that most musicians lack.
