Sugarfoot’s Ohio Players will be joined by original members from Lakeside, Confunkshun, The Bar-Kays and Dazz Band for the Masters of Funk tour set for 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 10th at the intimate Celebrity Theatre.

Considered the cream of ‘70s funk, the Ohio Players are back on the road, this time emphasizing the distinctive voice and musical style of its frontman, Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner. In 1971, he hooked up with a band in Dayton, Ohio called the Ohio Untouchables, but when he joined as singer and guitarist, they changed their name to Ohio Players. Within two years, the group cracked the Billboard charts and in 1974 scored the first of three platinum-selling albums with Skin Tight. No.1 hits followed such as “Fire” and “Love Rollercoaster.”

Take a “Fantastic Voyage” with Lakeside! Other mega hits include “All The Way Live,” “Raid,” “Something About That Woman” and “Outrageous.” The Lakeside journey began more than 27 years ago, when a group of high school students from Dayton, Ohio formed a band made up of talented musicians with ferocious stamina.

ConFunkShun is unquestionably among the heroes of funk with romantic ballads and dance-party hits galore. Formed more than 35 years ago in Vallejo, California, the solid gold and platinum record sellers are still as popular as ever with such timeless classics as “Love’s Train,” “Too Tight” and “the #1 dance smash “Ffun.”

The Bar-Kays’ 40-year musical odyssey has left an indelible mark on American music producing 27 albums (5 gold and 1 platinum), 37 singles (28 in the Top Ten) and an invitation into the Rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. Well-known hits include “Freak Show On The Dance Floor,” “Sex-O-Matic,” “Dirty Dancer” and “Soul Finger.”

Get ready for bass-slapping, synth-driven funk from Cleveland, Ohio as Dazz Band (short for “danceable jazz”) brings back those tight rhythms and smooth singing from the ‘80s. Hits include the Grammy-winning “Let It Whip” and the not-so-subtle sexual groove “Joystick.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets ($38 and $55) are on sale now at Celebrity Theatre or online at  www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext. 1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is located just south of the 202 freeway, at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.
