What the hell happened to Thanksgiving? One of the best family fun holidays around, it seems as if it has just been pushed to the wayside in lieu of the now (as if it wasn’t before) over-the-top commercialism of Christmas. Turn on the radio the day after Halloween and we hear Christmas music! That just blows my mind. Enough of the rant, but the moral is I’m not covering Christmas events, plays or concerts until AFTER Thanksgiving…so there! This week read about the Blackberry party, a fantastic beer festival, and some upcoming concerts and openings. For all the happened, is happening, and will happen in the Valley, read on.
Big Pour: It’s that special time of year again, a time that gives the Night Owl warm, fuzzy feelings inside and a sense of joy. It’s time for Draft Magazine’s Big Pour beer festival on this Saturday, November 22nd. There is nothing better than enjoying the gorgeous Phoenix weather and sampling beers. Beer elitists, like yours truly, can enjoy 100 local, national, and international brewery creations, including rare and unique beers, and some beers that have never been poured in Arizona before. Get tickets at www.draftmag.com/thebigpour and remember to drink responsibly!
Twilight: There has been a lot of buzz about this new movie, Twilight, which hit theaters this past Tuesday. I have been meaning to read this book for a long time, but I will have to watch the movie, then read the book. I always like to read the book first, and then watch the movie to compare. It’s based on a novel of the same name written by Phoenix author Stephenie Meyer. Twilight is a story of a modern day romance between a mortal and a vampire. What makes this book stand out besides its local ties is that Meyer developed the storyline after waking up from a dream she couldn’t get out of her mind. Twilight is the first of an equally enrapturing series that includes, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. It’s always good to have a local successfully put Phoenix on the map. Support our local writer by checking out her film and reading the series. For more information on the Twilight series and Stephenie Meyer, visit www.stepheniemeyer.com.
Great Guitar: You all know music is my passion and for those other music nerds out there, here’s a can’t miss. Critically acclaimed and extremely gifted guitarist, Al Di Meola, will entertain Martini Ranch on Friday, January 23rd. Al Di Meola holds the most prestigious guitar awards (of any guitarist in the world) from the highest rated guitar poll in the world, Guitar Player Magazine. He has been known throughout the world for the past two and a half decades as one of the most prominent virtuosos in the contemporary instrumental jazz field. His highly celebrated career has spanned a wide range of emotions into a unique style embodying the artists world inspired influences. Tickets are on sale, see you there!
Good Weenies: There’s nothing like a good hotdog! You may be familiar with my love of Pittsburgh Willies, and many of you may know that his hotdog stand is a staple at many events throughout the Valley. Well, I’m happy to announce that he has realized a goal he has had for many years; a brick and mortar hotdog joint. On November 22nd, he’s opening the new place inside the Merchants Square at 1509 N. Arizona Ave. (South of Warner and north of Knox on the east side of the street). He’ll have a small diner type setting with a few tables inside and plenty of outdoor seating, and he’ll be able to offer all my gourmet hot dogs, open face sammiches, soup, and a few offerings for the non meat eaters....and of course.....CHEESECAKE!!!!! The grand opening is from 11 to 4pm, so get out and support this guy and his unique Arizona product. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…
