So did you pack on the pounds during Thanksgiving or did you keep it fit to look hot when you are out and about? The Night Owl did the former (no surprise), but I look hot either way so…no matter. I promised I wasn’t going to talk about Holiday activities until after Thanksgiving, so I’ve got a lot of them; everything from some great holiday brews to some must-checkout exhibits and events that only come around during the Holiday season. For all that happened, is happening, and will happen in the Valley, read on.
House Parties: With the holidays here so is the prime house party season. I’ve been to many memorable house parties, and some that were more awkward than a physical exam. Here is the Night Owl public service announcement about how to throw a kick-ass party:
Do: Stock up on the cocktails; nothing kills a party faster than running out of drinks. Don’t: Forget to put away the valuables; having something ruined or broken is sure to make for a grumpy host. Do: Make a versatile play list; just because you think it’s good music doesn’t mean everyone else does. Don’t: Invite arch enemies or exes; no one is having fun when people are arguing. Do: Give your neighbors a heads-up, and if reasonable an invite. This is more likely to ward off noise complaints. Don’t: Forget to snap pictures; going through them the next day is half the fun. Do: Try to invite fun people, like the Night Owl. We know how to get a party started and keep it kickin!
Holiday Brews: Yes, I know I’m always talking about beer and other alcoholic beverages, but they are things that the Night Owl is passionate about. My favorite thing about the winter holidays- besides all the food and gift-giving- are the traditional holiday brews. Any brewery worth their salt will work hard to develop a stand-up Holiday beer that will help you navigate more than one party. My favorites of the season include Four Peaks Brewery’s Hopsquatch Barleywine, a sweet, high potency ale, and their Belgian Wit, a white Hefeweizen-ish brew. Gordon Biersch brewery’s does a wonderful job with its Winter Bock, a rich, dark brew. And of course I can’t forget to mention my first winter beer, Samuel Adams’s Old Fezziwig Ale, a true holiday treat. Next time you’re at a holiday party, bring a brew of the season. Happy Holidays and please remember everything in moderation!
Major Concert Announcement: Oh, I’m tickled with excitement. On December 4th, there is a major concert announcement for us esteemed media members at U.S. Airways arena. Who could it be that warrants such attention? McCartney? Madonna? Britney? I can’t wait, and you’ll be sure to find out soon.
Charlie Brown Christmas: So what is more traditional at Christmas than Charlie Brown? On December 5th at the Mesa Arts Center, jazz pianist David Benoit and his band will bring Vince Guaraldi’s magical music from the “Peanuts” Christmas Specials to life. Songs like “Christmas Time Is Here,” “Linus & Lucy’s Theme,” and all your other favorite melodies from Charles Schultz is sure to be a hot Valley ticket. Get your last minute tix at mesaartscenter.org.
Christmas Pudding: Alice Cooper’s uniquely Arizona variety show “Alice Cooper’s Christmas Pudding,” is set for December 13th at the Dodge Theatre. Famous for being an entertaining blend of comedy, music, dance and surprise performances, this year’s show will feature Bob Welch (formerly of Fleetwood Mac), Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, F5, Runaway Phoenix, Les Stroud and Whisky Falls, and of course Alice Cooper and his family and friends band playing his entire smash album, Alice Cooper’s Greatest Hits. It’s always a great night of music and fun, and I highly recommend it.
New Boutique: Where are all my fashionistas? Sway Boutique is having a grand opening event, ‘Fashion Nouveau,’ on December 4th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. The event will feature contemporary glamour and Hollywood chic in a live fashion display. There will be cocktails and lite bites, and it is open to the public (or else I wouldn’t tell ya!). It’s located at 9343 East Shea Boulevard at the Shops at 9400. Expect a lot of the major fashion folks from around town there and it’ll definitely be a place to see and be seen.
Margarita Making: Want to learn how to make a killer margarita or do you just want to have an excuse to drink margaritas? The Salty Senorita will be hosting ‘Margarita Mechanics’ on Wednesday, December 10th from 6:30- 8:30pm at the Peoria location. Learn to create the perfect margarita from the Valley’s best in this workshop. Margarita making students will acquire historical facts, exclusive techniques and insider knowledge on shaking up their own stellar marg. Cost to attend is $34.95 per person, which includes exclusive recipes, a private margarita and tequila sampling, indulgence in tequila inspired appetizers, and take-home goodies. Sounds like a good time, maybe I’ll even make an appearance. For reservations, call (623) 979-GUAC. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…
