HARD THROWING AND EASY GOING

Edwin Jackson is already happy in Arizona, and excited to be part of a strong, young team. It wouldn’t be accurate to say Edwin Jackson walks through the clubhouse. He strolls through. That’s it. He strolls through the clubhouse with almost comically oversized headphones on his ears and a smile on his face. That smile might as well be tattooed on, because it was there when he went through Spring Training drills, it’s there when he’s talking to the clubhouse attendants about that day’s lunch spread, it’s there when he puts out his hand to shake that of a D-backs team employee he hasn’t yet met, and it’s there when he meets his new teammates.

Sometimes in sports, to say someone is happy to be there is an insult. But when you understand the hype and the humbling and the history and the hurdles in this case, you can say that in the positive spirit in which it’s intended — Jackson’s happy to be here. With a lot of players, especially one with a bazooka of an arm, if you saw that they were on their fourth franchise in six years it’s natural to wonder why. And fairly or not, one can’t help but wonder if they just didn’t fit in. Any notion of that was dispelled very quickly in Arizona. “As a person, he’s gotten high marks,” D-backs General Manager Josh Byrnes said. “He’s a very competitive, upbeat guy.

You want starting pitchers to feel a sense of ownership over wins and losses and he seems to have that kind of makeup. “We did a lot of background on him prior to the trade as we would with anyone and he got very strong reviews from every place he’s been. His makeup is definitely a plus.” That’s a sentiment that wasn’t just noted from a front office or coaching perspective, but also from the guy whose locker was right next to Jackson’s in Spring Training. “I think he’s going to be good and fit in real nicely,” Brandon Webb said. “He’s really laid back, it seems to me.

When he’s out there, he’s going to be pretty intense, but off the field, when we’re doing stuff and just being in the clubhouse, he seems really cool and laid back. “He jokes around a lot and he’s a smooth guy. That’s how I’d say he is. He’s smooth.

The Arizona Rattlers are Back...2010!

The Arizona Rattlers are back! They have reformed under new ownership and have recruited some of the best and brightest in the game to assure that football fans in Phoenix don’t have to suffer through another summer without the hard hitting action we love. They just played their first game of the season against a tough Cleveland Gladiators team and came out on top 61 to 56.

It was a great warm up for the home opener April 16th against Mike Ditka’s Chicago Rush at US Airways Center. If you just crawled out from under a rock, you may not have heard that the Rattlers did something that has never been done before. The team decided to cut all of us football fans a break by literally giving away all of the tickets to their home opener to anyone who wanted to go enjoy a great game.

That’s right, they gave them away!!! They sacrificed over $500,000 in revenues to help all of us out as we deal with this lousy economy. On top of that, they have dirt-cheap ticket prices with lower bowl seats for as little as $17 for a single game or $10 per game for season tickets! Arena football differs from college football or the NFL in that it is played indoors on a much smaller field, which leads to more action and a feeling that you, the fan, are IN the game.

Even the seats furthest from the field at an Arizona Rattlers are closer to the action than the best at an NFL game. Because the Rattlers play at US Airways Center, most of the seats are so close to the action that fans really feel the hits and can get into the game. It’s a sports experience unlike any other. Another cool thing about the Rattlers is that they don’t have that snotty “we’re better than you” attitude.

Team president Danny White and head coach Kevin Guy have selected players who love the game for all the right reasons. No one is getting rich but they are all doing it because they love, live, eat, breath and sleep football and they just have to suit up and play every chance they get! That’s the kind of athletes we should support, and if we can do it affordably and have a great time in the process, that’s even better. Check out the Arizona Rattlers. They’re the best deal in sports this town has to offer.

COMMAND AND CONQUER
Written by Greg Salvatore on Saturday, 03 April 2010 19:18

There is an energy to the 2010 D-backs that is palpable the moment you set foot in the clubhouse or on the fi eld for batting practice. It isn’t that the team got younger. It didn’t. The D-backs are, collectively, an older club than the 2009 version. And the exuberance isn’t just with the youngest players like Justin Upton of Gerardo Parra, it’s evident with everyone, from Dan Haren to Adam LaRoche, from Bob Howry to Mark Reynolds. On March 9 in a Spring Training game against the Cincinnati Reds, Conor Jackson went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and a double, and while that may seem like nothing special inasmuch as it happened in an exhibition, it was exactly what the D-backs needed to see.

The team’s lineup suffered innumerable problems in 2009 stemming largely from the fact that the most dependable on-base machine was shut down in early May, and had been rendered ineffective even before that with Valley fever. “I’m just happy to have energy,” Jackson said, “that was my main goal coming in to this year.” Jackson is back and that’s music to the ears of his fellow D-backs who look to rebound in 2010 behind a bolstered lineup, a reinforced pitching staff and a revamped group of coaches. “I think the last thing we’re thinking about here is what we did last year,” Jackson said. “That’s the great thing about Spring Training.

We started on a clean slate.” Jackson got off to a hot start in Spring Training and kept it going, shooting line drives to the outfi eld the way he has when he’s helped carry the D-backs offense in the past. In addition to Jackson, another signifi cant focus this Spring was on Brandon Webb, who was perhaps the best pitcher in the National League from 2006-2008. A shoulder injury sustained on Opening Day in 2009 knocked him out for the year, but Webb spent the offseason focusing on a full return to health, and a full return to the D-backs rotation. Though that may be delayed a bit at the outset while he builds his arm strength, Webb is expected to contribute to the D-backs for most of this season.

“When Brandon Webb is healthy, what he does for a team’s morale and a team’s belief in whether or not we can win can’t really be measured,” Manager A.J. Hinch said. “Him alone, getting back to health, and putting him in a rotation that includes Dan Haren and Edwin Jackson and competition for the other guys, it just makes your team feel better. It makes your team feel like you have a chance to win every time he’s on the mound.” Hinch led a newly assembled D-backs coaching staff through a successful Spring Training this season. Kirk Gibson and Glenn Sherlock are the veterans. Jack Howell and Mel Stottlemyre Jr. are experienced, having joined the club during the 2009 season, but they got to work with the team from the outset in 2010, a significant luxury in a game predicated on repetition and mechanics. First Base Coach Matt Williams and Third Base Coach Bo Porter are the new guys, and both were integral immediately in Spring Training, with Williams running infield drills in workouts and after batting practice on game days, and Porter running outfield drills throughout camp.

Of course, the coaches aren’t the only additions to the uniformed personnel. LaRoche, Howry, Jackson, Ian Kennedy, Aaron Heilman and Kelly Johnson all donned Sedona Red with the intention of winning championships. LaRoche and Johnson played alongside each other in the second half of last season with the Atlanta Braves, and came up through the Braves’ minor league system together. “They bring a lot to our team in their presence,” Hinch said. “It helps for them with this team that they played together, it’s probably an easier transition for them. They’ve made themselves right at home. They don’t look the least bit uncomfortable as far as joining a new team.” The pair should lend support to a D-backs offense that was mostly carried last year by players still establishing themselves. Reynolds and Miguel Montero made huge strides last year, but nobody made a bigger leap than Upton. D-backs fans and baseball as a whole quickly ignored the fact that he was only 21 when his name was called at the All-Star Game in St. Louis.

This year, Upton should continue to rocket toward baseball superstardom, but will be well supported in the process. “I don’t want to put so much pressure on (Upton) that he thinks he needs to carry our team,” Hinch said. “One thing that we’ve established this offseason is that the additions of LaRoche and Johnson and Jackson to our lineup — and obviously Reynolds and Montero are a year older, a healthy Snyder and Drew coming back — we’ve got a lot of guys who can carry us at different parts of the year and he doesn’t have to be the only guy producing in the lineup.” The organization worked out a long-term contract with Upton prior to the season that will keep him in a D-backs uniform through 2015.

It was something of a theme for the team this winter, working out multi-year deals with young players. Reynolds signed a three year deal with a club option for a fourth midway through Spring Training, and Edwin Jackson signed a two-year deal in February. Jackson, who has now been traded three times, said he’s looking forward to staying in the same clubhouse for a couple of years. “It’s always good to have some stability,” he said. “Through the years I have spent time in clubhouses year-to-year, but now to be locked in, I can really get adjusted and get acquainted with my teammates. By two years, you know everybody, they know you, and you know each other’s habits, likes and dislikes. It’s always nice to know that you have some stability and you’ll be settled in for a couple years.”

There will be a lot of spectacular things to see at Chase Field in 2010. The defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies come to town for a weekend series in April (23-25), giving the D-backs an early shot at showing baseball the new, improved squad in 2010. The New York Yankees, reigning World Series champs, will be making only their second regular season trip to Chase Field in June. In games that will likely fill the house, D-backs fans can buy a number of different ticket packages that can put them in the seats and help hold a home field advantage against a formidable opponent. The D-backs will take on the rival Dodgers in a pair of significant series at Chase Field, the first coming on Fourth of July weekend, when the D-backs will have three days of celebration, with fireworks presented by Gila River Casinos.

The Dodgers are on the schedule again when the D-backs close out the home schedule on Sept. 24-26. Fandemonium weekend might be complete with important games to decide the NL West, especially when you include three games against Colorado (Sept. 21-23) that precede the Dodgers series. The D-backs have a new coaching staff, several new key contributors on the field, and an edge that suggests something special is happening in the desert in 2010.

FROM ‘AINTS’ TO ‘SAINTS’

New Orleans Saints Champions of Super Bowl XLIV

Many football fans, leading with their head, viewed the Indianapolis Colts as the better team coming into Super Bowl XLIV. But when all the multicolored confetti had rained down on Sun Life Stadium, after the New Orleans Saints took down the favored Colts 31-17, the game turned out to be about heart. After the Saints won their first National Football League championship -- 43 years after they played their first game -- they talked about the once-ravaged city they represent. “We play for so much more than ourselves,” said Saints quarterback Drew Brees with his brown hair matted to his forehead. “We played for our city.

We played for the entire Gulf Coast region. We played for the entire Who Dat nation that has been behind us every step of the way.” Brees referenced trying to rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina -- and a football franchise, too. Burn those bags. Put the S back in front of those Ain’ts. These Saints, finally, are Superb. “It means everything,” Brees said. “We’re here because of their strength and everything they fought through here the last few years. They’ve given us so much support, so we owe it all to our fans.”

Some 700 miles away from Sun Life Stadium, it was All Saints Night on Bourbon Street as the French Quarter rocked with something approaching Mardi Gras intensity. “Just to think of the road we’ve all traveled, the adversity we’ve all faced,” Brees said. “It’s unbelievable. I mean, are you kidding me? Four years ago, whoever thought this would be happening? Eighty-five percent of the city was under water. Most people left not knowing if New Orleans would ever come back, or if the organization would ever come back. “We just all looked at one another and said, ‘We’re going to rebuild together. We are going to lean on each other.’ That’s what we’ve done the last four years and this is the culmination in all that belief.”

SPEED VS. GUNS BLAZING

‘Saints and Colts Set the Stage for Super Bowl XLIV’

With New Orleans about to make its first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history, memories of Hurricane Katrina still lingering and close ties between the team and the city’s rebuilding effort, Colts players understand why the Saints are this year’s sentimental favorite. They just want to play the role of spoiler. “There’s a reason America is pulling for New Orleans, and why wouldn’t they? They’ve been through a lot,” Indy safety Antoine Bethea said. “Sports tend to pull people together, so it’s commendable for New Orleans to be, as I guess you’d say, America’s team right now. But at the same time, we’re going to go out there as the Indianapolis Colts and play ball.” The reach of New Orleans’ fans goes all the way to the highest levels of the White House. “You know, I think both teams are terrific,” President Barack Obama told ABC News. “I guess I am rooting a little bit for the Saints as the underdog, partly just because when I think about what’s happened in New Orleans over the last several years and how much that team means to them.

You know, I’m pretty sympathetic.” The Colts know they’re still the favorite in at least one state, Indiana. “He’s entitled to his opinion and why wouldn’t he be rooting for them?” Bethea said of Obama’s decision to cheer for New Orleans. “Like I said, the city has been through a lot. But the Colts, man, we’re going to go down there and give them a

The Game at a Glance.... » Last meeting: Peyton Manning threw three touchdown passes as the Colts handled the Saints with ease in a 41-10 home victory on Kickoff Weekend in 2007. » Series: The series is even at 5-5. » Last week: The Colts held the Jets’ top-ranked rushing attack to 86 yards in a 30-17 win at home. ... The Saints advanced on the leg of Garret Hartley, whose 40-yarder in overtime sealed the 31-28 win over Minnesota.

A potential shootout: Only one player threw for more touchdowns than Manning (33) in the regular season -- Drew Brees, with a leagueleading 34. Indy’s second-ranked passing offense will be pitted against the Saints’ 26th-ranked pass defense, while the Saints’ fourth-ranked aerial attack will contend with the 14th-ranked pass defense of the Colts. There should be no shortage of touchdowns through the air in this one.

The experience factor: Much of the attention will be focused on Manning attempting to cement his legacy with a second Lombardi Trophy, but the Colts have a number of important players who were with the team for Super Bowl XLI. Among the Colts players who own Super Bowl rings are Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Gary Brackett, Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis and Jeff Saturday. The Saints, on the other hand, have limited Super Bowl experience. Randall Gay played in two of the Patriots’ four visits to the big game, starting against the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX, while Darren Sharper was a rookie with the following the 1997 season.

Speed vs. speed: With the likes of Reggie Bush and Devery Henderson, the Saints field one of the quickest offenses in the league. But the Colts counter with a defense that relies more on its speed than it does size. The Colts have young legs in the likes of WRs Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon, but they will have to be wary of ball-hawking Saints safety Sharper, who can still find that extra gear in his 13th season.

Did you know? The last time both No. 1 seeds reached the Super Bowl was 1993 when the Cowboys defeated the Bills 30-13. ... The Saints are making their first Super Bowl appearance in the franchise’s 43-year history. ... Dating back to when the franchise was in Baltimore, all four of the Colts’ Super Bowl appearances have taken place in Miami.

GOPHERS/CYCLONES HAVE DESERT INSIGHT

Iowa State vs. Minnesota INSIGHT BOWL December 31, 2009 ASU Sun Devil Stadium Tempe, AZ Separated by just over 200 miles, Iowa State and Minnesota will travel roughly the same distance to the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. The journey was significantly longer for the Cyclones. One year removed from a 10-loss season, Iowa State is set to play in its first postseason game in four years when it faces the Golden Gophers at Sun Devil Stadium on Dec. 31. The Cyclones (6-6) seem to be one of the more unlikely recipients of a bowl invitation following last season’s debacle. Iowa State dropped its final 10 games and was outscored by an average of 19.8 points in eight Big 12 losses. Things appeared to get even worse when Coach Gene Chizik left for Auburn just weeks after the season ended. The Golden Gophers (6-6) are making their third Insight Bowl appearance in four years. They lost to Kansas 42-21 last season and dropped a 44-41 overtime game to Texas Tech in 2006. Despite the close proximity between Iowa State and Minnesota and the intense rivalry each school has with Iowa, this will be the first meeting between these programs since the Gophers’ 53-29 victory at the Metrodome in 1997. Minnesota leads the series 22-2-1 and hasn’t lost to the Cyclones since 1898, yet they’ve only met twice since 1924. For more information and ticket sales visit www.insightbowl.com
